Tips for Travelling to Japan for the First Timers

Golden Route Japan Itinerary

If you’re planning your first trip to Japan and want to dive deeper into each destination, I’ve put together three very detailed blogs on Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. While this blog post includes a brief 10 day to 2 week Japan itinerary, these individual guides go into alot more detail. They offer in depth day-by-day breakdowns, destination-specific tips, more thorough hotel recommendations, area overviews, hidden gems, and must-see highlights. They’re the perfect next step for planning your Japan itinerary and definitely worth exploring!

KYOTO (4-6 nights)

Things to do in Kyoto and 3 Day Kyoto Itinerary

OSAKA (3-4 nights)

3 Day Osaka Itinerary

Planning your first Japan trip can feel exciting but also a little overwhelming, trust me, I’ve been there! After 4 trips to Japan and visiting 23 prefectures, I’ve picked up plenty of tips and tricks along the way. These are are a few tips I wish I knew before my first visit to Japan, and they’ll definitely make travelling to Japan for the first time smoother, easier, and far more enjoyable.

Suica or Pasmo Card

Japan Rail Pass or Regional JR Pass

A Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) allows unlimited travel on JR trains, including high-speed Shinkansen, for 7, 14, or 21 days. However, after prices have steeply risen, it’s not always the cheaper option for many Japan itineraries. Unless you’re planning on taking 3 or more Shinkansen trips within 7 days (or 5+ within 14 days), it’s unlikely the pass will save you money. That said, if you consider your day trips and trips between stops it’s definitely worth doing the math. You can use this JR calculator to see if your Japan Itinerary would benefit from a JR Pass.

Pro Tip – The JR Pass has limited value in Tokyo since it only covers JR-operated lines, not the city’s extensive Metro. When planning, consider activating your pass once you leave Tokyo or on the day you take your first day trip.

An alternative option would be one of Japan’s JR regional passes. These are often far more cost-effective for travelers who want to explore a specific area in depth. For example:

The JR Kansai-Hokuriku Area Pass is a great option if you want to explore Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Kanazawa, Anonhasidate and Okayama.

The Hokuriku Arch Pass connects Tokyo and Osaka via Kanazawa, offering unlimited travel along this scenic northern route.

The Hakone Fuji Pass or Shizuoka Izu Fuji Pass are ideal for shorter getaways, especially if you’re interested in hot springs, coastal views, and the stunning scenery around Mt. Fuji.

These regional options are usually cheaper, more flexible, and tailored to the routes most visitors take in those areas.

Metro passes are cheap, and a great way to cap your city transport. If you plan to skip around the attractions within a city, they will usually save you quite a lot of money.

Trains finish at midnight

While Japan’s public transport is famously reliable, most trains stop running around midnight.

Buy Attractions in advance as they sell out

Popular attractions such as Universal Studios Japan, Shibuya Sky and Teamlabs book out up to a month in advance. This happens year round, but especially during peak seasons like cherry blossom season and golden week.

Other Helpful Travel Tips for Visiting Japan✈️

  • 📱 Consider using an Esim for convenient data access while keeping your original SIM card.
  • 🔒 Coin lockers at train stations are a secure and easy way to store luggage for a few hours or a full day.
  • 💴 Carry cash – even in big cities, some places don’t accept cards.
  • 🚕 Taxis are expensive, so trains and subways are usually the better option.
  • 🍱 Convenience stores deserve a space on your itinerary and are an experience in themselves. They offer affordable, tasty meals and snacks.
  • 🙅‍♂️ Tipping isn’t customary in Japan and can even be considered rude.
  • 🍶 At izakayas or themed restaurants and bars, expect a small compulsory seating charge/appetizer (Otoshi).
  • 🌐 Register on the Visit Japan website before arrival, download your QR code, for smoother entry.
  • 💳 Use a Wise Card for great exchange rates and withdraw cash from ATMs when you land. You get a much better rate than traditional banks or currency exchanges.

Where to stay in each capital city

Choosing the best base is essential to any Japan Itinerary, so to help, I’ve created three detailed blogs on where to stay in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Tips for Booking your Hotel or Ryokan in Japan

💡 Accommodation Booking Tips for Japan

  • My go-to booking sites are Booking.com and Trip.com — they list nearly all options, from hotels and resorts to guesthouses and Airbnb’s.
  • Both platforms offer strong loyalty benefits:
    • Booking.com often gives me free breakfasts or room upgrades.
    • Trip.com lets me collect cashback dollars, I get up to 25% off, and I even scored free airport lounge passes.
  • Book as early as possible. Japan is one of the most visited countries right now, and top hotels sell out quickly, especially in peak seasons like cherry blossom or golden week.
  • Aim to book 3–6 months (or even 9 months) in advance for peak season, or at least 1–2 months ahead in low season.
  • To be honest, I usually book as soon as I start planning my trip.
  • Choose a hotel within 500–700m of a train station. You’ll already be walking 20,000 steps a day, so this makes a huge difference.
