Figuring out the best area to base yourself takes time… and for first-time visitors, a lot of research and many major headaches. There are so many unknowns, especially when you’re trying to find the best place that suits your travel style, budget, and itinerary.
BUT… never fear! The good news is this guide will help break it down so you can confidently decide which area of Tokyo to stay, to make the most of your Tokyo itinerary.
This guide covers (in my expert opinion) the best areas to stay in Tokyo. I have based this off my personal experiences travelling to Tokyo 5 times. Plus, each area has a convenient location and proximately to public transport, train stations and the main attractions, that most first-time travelers will usually want to visit.

Where to Stay in Tokyo: Choosing between the different neighborhoods & train lines
When deciding where to base yourself in Tokyo, location is everything. I suggest you aim to stay close to the JR Yamanote Line, the city’s major train loop that links most of Tokyo’s top neighborhoods and attractions. Choosing a great location like Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Ueno means you’ll have world-class shopping, dining, and nightlife right on your doorstep with quick and easy train access to everywhere else.
If you’re looking for a more traditional, old school Tokyo experience, consider Asakusa. While it’s not on the Yamanote Line, it’s well connected via the Ginza Line, another line you will use a lot (Connects from Shibuya to Asakusa). It is also home to famous spots like Senso-ji Temple and Nakamise shopping street.
No matter where you ultimately choose, try to book accommodation within a short five-minute walk of either a JR or Tokyo Metro station. This will save you time, especially if you’re planning day trips or want to cover a lot in a short stay.

1. Shinjuku – one of the best neighborhoods for nightlife and neon lights
Things to do in Shinjuku?
Shinjuku is definitely one of Tokyo’s most vibrant and happening neighborhoods and a great place to stay for your first visit. It is renowned for its neon-billboards, narrow streets, towering buildings, a HUGE entertainment and night scene with plenty of bars.

Shinjuku is also home to Kabukicho, which is Tokyo’s famous entertainment district. Kabukicho is known for its nightlife, restaurants, and shopping. As well as the Instagram famous Memory Lane and the Golden Gai Districts which are warrens of narrow alleys made up of tiny bars, restaurants and shops.
(Please note) Shinjuku is also where you will find the ‘Red Light’ district and ‘love hotels’. It’s quite discreet, and in my opinion, not a huge issue or deterrent, BUT this is obviously a decision for you to make. I stay in Shinjuku with my kids if that is of any help.
Shinjuku is also a popular area because of its connection to transport. Shinjuku Station is one of the city’s major transportation hubs. It boasts an extensive network of train and subway lines, including the JR Yamanote Line. This provides easy access to popular tourist destinations such as Shibuya, Harajuku, and Tokyo Station. Another positive is the easy connection to Narita and Haneda airports via the Narita Express and Airport Limousine buses.
Another consideration, when choosing where to stay in Tokyo, is the fact that trains finish around midnight. This means you may want to be staying somewhere central if you enjoy a night out on the town.

Asakusa is one of my favourite places, and offers the perfect blend of cultural historic landmarks, and convenience and is ideal for first time visitors to Tokyo.
It is home to many major attractions, including the famous Senso-ji, a MUST SEE in Tokyo and Tokyo’s oldestBuddhist temple. You will also find Nakamise-dori here, a busy street lined with traditional shops and street food stalls.
Additionally, Asakusa offers easy access to Tokyo’s extensive transportation network. Asakusa Station serves as a major hub for the Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway lines. From here, you can conveniently explore most other parts of the city with ease. This includes popular destinations like Shibuya, Ginza and Akihabara.
Furthermore, Asakusa also offers a great range of great value accommodation options. It is often a lot cheaper than the higher prices in Shinjuku or Shibuya.

One of the highlights is Ueno Park. This is a large public park that’s perfect for letting kids roam, have a picnic, or simply enjoy the outdoors. Within walking distance, you’ll also find Ueno Zoo. Japan’s oldest and one of the most loved by locals. Additionally Ueno has several museums including the Ueno Royal Museum and the National Museum of Nature and Science.

Tokyo Disney
If you’re only planning to spend one day at Tokyo Disneyland or DisneySea, I recommend staying somewhere central in Tokyo. Tokyo Disney is located just 20 minutes by train from Tokyo Station. And, thanks to Japan’s super-efficient train system, you can reach the parks from most neighborhoods in about 30 to 55 minutes. Making it an easy, breezy, daytrip and no need to relocate hotels just for one Disney day!

Deciding to stay in the central Tokyo will give you much better access to the rest of the city, more choice for dining, and you’ll find much more affordable accommodation choices.
That said, if you’re a diehard Disney fan or travelling with young kids and want to do multiple days at the parks, or experience staying at Disneyland then by all means, it’s an incredible experience. Ginza: Luxury & Shopping
Ginza is Tokyo’s upscale district, and perfect for those who appreciate the finer things in life. Think fine dining and luxury shopping. It’s where many of Tokyo’s luxury hotels are located. And, if you’re looking to indulge, this is your spot. It is also a great central spot to stay and well connected along the Ginza railway line.
Roppongi: Nightlife and Art
Roppongi offers a dynamic mix of nightlife and culture. By day, explore contemporary art museums; by night, dance the hours away in its vibrant club scene. It is located not too far from Shibuya and Shinjuku.

When Should I Book My Tokyo Accommodation?
As early as possible. Tokyo is one of the most visited cities in the world, and the best places (especially unique, budget hotels or a boutique hotel in top locations) can sell out or have limited rooms available quickly, especially during peak seasons like:
- Cherry Blossom Season (Late March to Early April)
- Golden Week (Late April to Early May)
- Autumn Leaves Season (Mid-November)
- New Year’s and major festivals
- Ski Season in the Ski regions (booking up to 12 months in advance)
✨ Savvy Tip: Aim to book at least 3–9 months in advance if you’re visiting during these popular times. Off-season? A month or two ahead is usually fine.
Where’s the Best Place to Book – Direct or on a site like Booking.com?
Both are solid options, but booking via a 3rd party site like Booking.com or Trip.com does come with perks:
- You often get a cheaper deal.
- You might not have to pay in advance and can ‘pay at the hotel’
- Flexible cancellation policies.
- Loyalty points and upgrades, including room upgrades and free breakfasts depending on the platform and your level.

What Else Should I Know About Booking a Tokyo Hotel?
- Rooms are Small: Small room sizes are pretty standard in Japan, especially in city hotels. It’s a good idea to check the square meter size before you book or you may find yourself playing a game of tetrus with your suitcases.
- Check-In Times: Many hotels don’t allow check-in until 3 or 4 PM. Check with them before you arrive if the front desk is able to hold your luggage.
- Amenities: Even budget hotels often come with slippers, PJs, razors, and toothbrushes. It’s like hotel magic. In some hotels in Japan, I even gotten facemasks and moisturizers.
- Toilets: Expect heated seats, built-in bidets, and sometimes even music. Yes, really.
- Quiet Culture: Japanese hotels are usually very peaceful. Keep the noise down in hallways and common areas.

- Book with Free Cancellation if you’re booking early, plans can change!
- Stay Near a Train Station. Prioritise proximity to the JR Yamanote Line it’s your golden ticket to nearly every major neighbourhood.
- Avoid Airbnbs Unless You’re Sure and they have good reviews. Many listings are unlicensed or in residential areas. Stick to hotels or Airbnbs with good reviews and a good location.
- Don’t Stress Too Much. Tokyo is incredibly safe, clean, and efficient. Even if you pick an area that’s not “perfect,” it’s easy to get around and explore.
