Most travelers rush to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, but beyond the big cities lies another side of Japan. A quieter, more authentic, and often more beautiful side. Hidden waterfalls, onsens, quiet coastal towns, ancient shrines tucked deep in the forest, this is Off the Beaten Path Japan.

These are the places where you can avoid the crowds and discover some of the country’s best kept secrets. If you’ve been dreaming of exploring Japan in a way that feels authentic and unforgettable, this guide will take you straight to the hidden gems locals love but few tourists ever find.

After four trips across 24 prefectures, I’ve collected some of my favorite hidden gems in Japan, the kind of places you don’t usually see in guidebooks.

I’ll be sharing these finds one by one here on the blog and cross-posting them to my Instagram, along with a pinned map to make them easy to find.

1. O’Daru Falls Waterfall & Hot Spring – Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka

📌 Location

Starting off strong with one of the most breathtaking hidden gems in Shizuoka Prefecture. Tucked away on the Izu Peninsula, this spot is only a few hours from Tokyo but feels worlds away from the city.

Imagine soaking in warm mineral waters while gazing up at a cascading waterfall surrounded by lush forest. It’s one of those rare places in Japan where nature and relaxation blend perfectly, and even better, this hot spring is tattoo-friendly.

Onsite you’ll find multiple outdoor onsen pools, the waterfall itself, an underground onsen hot spring bath, a swimming pool, and changing rooms. What you won’t find are the crowds. We had this place to ourselves for hours, sharing it only with a handful of locals and the odd traveler.

🔥 Pro Tip: The best way to get here is by car. Like many of Japan’s more remote, off the beaten path spots, hiring a car or campervan makes exploring so much easier—and often more affordable. Plus, it gives you the freedom to uncover even more hidden treasures along the way.

2. Yanagawa – The Venice of Kyushu, Fukuoka

📌Location

Nicknamed the “Venice of Kyushu,” Yanagawa is a charming canal town less than an hour from Fukuoka City. Once a castle town, its waterways were originally built for defense but today they’re best enjoyed on a relaxing donkobune (flatboat) ride through the peaceful canals.

Glide along narrow waterways lined with willow trees, traditional wooden houses, and stone bridges while your boatman sings local folk songs. At times you’ll even need to duck under low bridges—or climb over them—to continue your journey. It’s one of the most unique and atmospheric ways to experience Fukuoka’s history and culture.

Onsite you’ll find boat operators running cruises year-round, small riverside cafés, and local shops selling Yanagawa’s specialty: steamed eel (unagi seiro-mushi). While it’s a beloved day trip for Japanese visitors, international tourists often skip it—making it a true off the beaten path Japan experience.

💴 Boat Ride: Around ¥1,500–¥2,000 for a 60-minute cruise

🔥 Pro Tip: Bring some yen in cash, you’ll float past a canal-side vendor serving the most delicious strawberry ice cream, the perfect treat for your ride.

🚉 Getting to Yanagawa
From Fukuoka’s Nishitetsu Tenjin Station, take the Nishitetsu Tenjin–Ōmuta Line directly to Yanagawa Station (about 50 minutes on the express). From there, it’s a short walk or quick shuttle bus to the boat boarding area.

If you prefer a more flexible trip, renting a car gives you the freedom to explore other nearby towns and hidden spots in Kyushu along the way.

Or, you can book an organised day tour like this one, and combine the Yanagawa Canals with some of the other local highlights. 3. Ukimido Floating Temple ‘Spirited Away’ – Shiga

Step into a scene straight out of Spirited Away at Ukimido, the “floating temple” of Shiga. Sitting quietly on the waters of Lake Biwa, this wooden hexagonal hall seems to drift above the lake, especially when the mist rolls in. With lanterns glowing at night and the gentle lapping of waves all around, it feels more like a dreamscape than real life.

PRO Tip – This magical temple is also referred to as Mangetsu-ji (満月寺) which is the formal temple name, and Ukimidō (浮御堂, Floating Hall) is the famous hall that extends out onto Lake Biwa.

🚄 Getting to Ukimido / Mangetsu-ji

  • Visiting Ukimido is easiest as part of a day tour, and by the time you add up your train fare, taxi and bus fare, its actually a very affordable option. Additionally you get to visit many other incredible Shiga sites all in one compact day.   • From Kyoto: Take the JR Kosei Line to Katata Station (about 20 minutes). From there, it’s a short bus or 10-minute taxi ride to Ukimido.
  • From Osaka: Take the JR Special Rapid Service to Katata Station (about 40 minutes), then transfer by bus or taxi.

Inside, you’ll find serene Buddhist statues and panoramic views over Lake Biwa. Outside, the temple’s reflection in the water makes it one of the most photogenic spots in Shiga, especially at sunrise or sunset.

4. 🎡Ioma Mountain Amusement Park – Nara’s Hidden Mountaintop Gem

Most people make this mistake when visiting Nara… they see the deer 🦌 and totally miss this adorable mountaintop amusement park with breathtaking views over Osaka! 🎡✨

A day trip to Ikoma Sanjo Amusement Park from Osaka or Kyoto is an easy add-on to your Nara itinerary. Just hop on the Kintetsu Line to Ikoma Station (about 20 minutes), then ride the park’s animal-faced cable cars up the mountain — the cuteness overload starts right there!

At the top, you’ll find a quirky, retro-style amusement park with old-school rides, a flying tower, and even a pedal-powered monorail overlooking Osaka’s glittering cityscape. The park feels delightfully nostalgic, offering a glimpse into Japan’s vintage funfair era — minus the crowds.

⏰ Best time to visit: Late afternoon for sunset — the night views of Osaka’s skyline are absolutely dreamy. 🌇

Perfect for a relaxed afternoon of fun, Ikoma Sanjo Amusement Park is one of those hidden gems that proves Nara is so much more than just deer and temples.

5. Speakeasy Bar Hidden Behind a Red Phone Booth

Scotch & Branch is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Kyoto’s Kawaramachi district. This intimate speakeasy-style bar is hidden behind a iconic red phone booth and offers a cozy, dimly lit atmosphere that transports patrons to the Prohibition era. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a meticulously curated selection of over 100 whiskies, including rare Scotch and Japanese varieties. The bar’s signature cocktails, centre around scotch and whiskey…which is not suprising given its name. Whether you’re a whisky connoisseur or a cocktail enthusiast, Scotch & Branch provides a memorable experience with its quirky entrance, exceptional drinks and warm hospitality.

6. Secret Turtle Beach in Miyakojima – Okinawa

Shigira Beach is one of those spots that’ll make you question if you’re really still in Japan, because honestly, it feels more like Hawaii or the Maldives and not at all what you would expect when you think of Japan.

Water so clear you can seethe coral reef without even putting your head under, and sea turtles casually cruising by like they own the place (which, to be fair, they kinda do).

It’s tucked inside the gorgeous Shigira Resort area on Miyakojima, but don’t worry, it’s open to the public, so anyone can live out their tropical daydream here. The water stays calm and shallow, making it perfect for snorkeling or just floating the day away. And if you’re hoping to spot those famous turtles, go with a local guide — they know exactly where the chill turtle crew hangs out. 🐢

7. Don’t RENT a KIMONO – Make one as a Souvenir to Keep!

8. Hakone Kowaki-en Yunessun Hot Spring Theme Park

Yunessun Onsen in Hakone is where traditional hot springs meet full-on fun park energy. Instead of quiet soaking only, you’ll find themed baths like wine, coffee, sake, noodle cup and even outdoor pools with Mount Fuji views on clear days. It’s swimsuit-friendly, mixed-gender, and perfect if you’re traveling with friends, kids, or anyone who finds traditional onsen rules a bit intimidating.

You still get the relaxing mineral-rich waters, just with a playful twist — think less silent retreat, more spa day with personality.

9. Amanohashidate View Land – Amusement park in Kyoto prefecture

(Pair this with a full-day Kyoto trip to Ine no Funaya.)

One of the most stunning viewpoints I’ve ever seen. Take the chairlift to the top and look out over Japan’s legendary sandbar — often nicknamed the “Bridge to Heaven.” The park isn’t just about the scenery either; you’ll find fun little attractions like pedal cars, a ferris wheel, go-karts, an observation deck, and a café to chill with the view.

🚆 GETTING THERE: Tour or DIY?

You can visit Amanohashidate and Ine Funaya either on a guided tour or by navigating the trains and buses yourself.

OPTION 1: Guided Day Tour (Easiest)

Amanohashidate & Ine Funaya one-day tour

  • Ideal if you want zero planning.
  • Includes transport from Kyoto/Osaka, sightseeing stops, and a guide.
  • Cost: ~¥8,000–¥9,000 (often cheaper than doing the train + bus unless you have a rail pass).
  • Great if you’re short on time or want a smooth, no-stress day.

OPTION 2: DIY by Train + Bus

From Kyoto Station

From Osaka
