Hoi An
Just 30km from Da Nang, Hoi An Ancient Town is one of Vietnam’s most beloved destinations and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wandering its lantern-lit streets feels like stepping back in time, with preserved architecture, riverside cafés, and bustling markets.
Hoi An is also famous for its tailor shops, where you can have custom outfits made in just a couple of days, for a budget price, a unique highlight of any Vietnam vacation.
Da Nang
If you’re looking for a mix of city buzz and seaside vibes, Da Nang offers exactly that. Known for its modern resorts, long stretches of soft sand like My Khe Beach, and vibrant city center, it’s a fun contrast to Hoi An’s historic atmosphere. For those flying in, Da Nang Airport is a convenient gateway, making it an easy starting point for your journey.
Where we based ourselves
Between the two, we chose to base ourselves in Hoi An. While Da Nang has its modern appeal, Hoi An’s ancient charm, cultural depth, and more relaxed pace offered exactly the experience we were craving. Immersing ourselves in this historic town felt like the perfect way to begin our North Vietnam itinerary.

Dragon Bridge: The Dragon Bridge is an iconic landmark spanning the Han River in Danang. If you plan to visit on a weekend evening, you will get to watch the fire breathing display in the evening.
Days -6 Vietnam Itinerary – Hue
Next up on this Vietnam itinerary is the ancient city of Hue, where history and culture collide along the banks of the Perfume River. Once the imperial capital of Vietnam, Hue is home to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Imperial City, an enormous complex of palaces, temples, and royal tombs. Beyond the citadel, you can explore majestic pagodas like Thien Mu Pagoda, take a scenic boat ride on the river, or visit an abandoned dragon waterpark.
Getting to Hue from Hoi An / Danang
Best way to get to Hue is to catch a train to Hue from Danang. Additionally, it is also one of the most scenic rides in Vietnam along the coastline.

✈️ Best Way to Travel from Hue to Hanoi ✈️
I’d highly recommend flying, it’s by far the fastest and easiest way. Flights in Vietnam are cheap, and with so much to see across the country, saving time on travel means more time exploring.
The best way to get from Hue to Hanoi (North Vietnam) really depends on your travel style, budget, and how much time you want to spend on the journey. Here are the main options:
🚀 Option 1: Flight (Fastest & Most Convenient)
You can fly directly from Phu Bai International Airport in Hue to Hanoi in around 1.5 hours.
🚂 Option 2: Train (Scenic & Slower)
From Hue Railway Station, the overnight train is also around 13–14 hours. Sleeper berths make it comfortable, and you’ll wake up ready to start your North Vietnam itinerary in Hanoi.
🚌 Option 3: Bus (Cheapest)
It’s usually takes 12–14 hours by sleeper bus. Fine for anyone on a strict budget but not ideal if you want to maximize sightseeing.
👉 My Pick: Whether you’re coming from Hue or Hoi An, I recommend flying. It’s affordable, saves a full day of travel, and gets you straight into the action in Hanoi.

Days 8-10 North Vietnam Itinerary – Ninh Binh
Next stop in this 2 weeks in Central and Northern Vietnam Itinerary is Ninh Binh
Ninh Binh, known as the Ha long Bay of the land, is a natural paradise. Vast waterways, caves and UNESCO World Heritage site of Tran An. It is definitely worth visiting and was one of the absolute highlights of my trip!
How to get to Ninh Binh
Ninh Binh is located 2-2.5 hours away from Hanoi. The best way to travel to Ninh Binh is by luxury transfer. We booked this transfer: CLICK HERE
Where to stay in Ninh Binh
We stayed here, at the Hang Lan Bungalows. They are located in a very central part of Ninh Binh, a short ride or walk to many local highlights. The overwater rustic bungalows are set on the river and have a beautiful outlook over the Tam Coc Mountains and rice fields.
Things to Do in Ninh Binh
MUST DO: Mua Cave offers visitors a breathtaking panorama of the Tam Coc region from its summit, accessible via a steep but rewarding climb of about 500 steps. Within the grounds of the Mua Cave complex you will also find the Lotus Lake & Boardwalk (in bloom May-June).
MUST DO: Next up, and honestly just as incredible, is the Trang An Boat Tour. If you only have time for one boat trip in Vietnam, make it this one. The ride takes you through dramatic limestone cliffs, hidden caves, and peaceful waterways. Each boat is rowed by a local, and you’ll drift past temples, lush greenery, and jaw-dropping karst formations. It’s a real highlight of any Vietnam trip.
Boat Trip in Tam Coc and Bich Dong Pagoda
Often called “Halong Bay on land,” the Tam Coc boat ride takes you past golden rice fields, dramatic limestone cliffs, and through dark caves, all while locals row with their feet!
Hire a Bike and Ride Through the Rice Fields
There’s no better way to soak up Ninh Binh’s charm than pedaling through quiet villages and endless rice paddies. It’s flat, easy riding, and the scenery will take your breath away.
Pho Co Hao Lu is the perfect spot to visit at night. Nestled right on the river, it features a beautifully lit pagoda, lanterns, and boats and lanterns similar to Hoi An, but much quieter! It’s an ideal place to enjoy dinner while taking in the serene views of the river and pagodas.
Days 10-13 North Vietnam Itinerary – Ha Long Bay Cruise
Halong Bay is a must for any Vietnam itinerary. This UNESCO World Heritage site in northeastern Vietnam is famous for its thousands of limestone islands and islets rising dramatically from emerald waters. No trip to Vietnam is complete without a Halong Bay cruise, it’s a scene straight out of a postcard.
Who we cruised with in Halong Bay
We were lucky enough to go on two cruises out of Halong Bay and I have included the information of both below.

Included Activities: A visit to the Vung Vieng fishing village and the Da Xep Geology Park. A private island BBQ lunch and a trip to exploring Thien Canh Son cave.
We also enjoyed kayaking, cooking demonstrations, morning Tai Chi on the deck and night squid fishing.

🌤️ The Best Time to Visit Vietnam (Central and Northern)🌤️
The best time to visit Central and Northern Vietnam is typically from March to May and September to November. During these months, the weather is more stable, with warm, dry days in Central Vietnam and cooler, clearer conditions in the north. Summer can bring high heat and heavy rains, especially from June to August, while December to February in the north can be surprisingly chilly, particularly in the mountains. Planning your Vietnam trip around the shoulder seasons not only offers comfortable weather but also fewer crowds, making it an ideal time to explore both regions.
End – Two Week North Vietnam Itinerary
Whether you’re planning just a week in Vietnam or a longer adventure through Southeast Asia, this itinerary hit’s the Northern highlights of Hoi An, Hue Hanoi, Ninh Binh, and Halong Bay while leaving room for unforgettable experiences. For a future trip, I’d love to return to explore more of South Vietnam again— from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta, Natrang and Phu Quoc.
