Why Visit Guilin, Guangxi Province?
Guilin is one of Chinas most photogenic scenic areas in China.
But Guilin isn’t just about pretty views. You’ll find caves, hikes, bamboo rafting, ancient villages, culture, and food that hits hard after a long day of exploring.
Where to Stay: Guilin vs Yangshuo County
Many travellers ask whether they should stay in Guilin or Yangshuo.
In my opinion, the answer is…. Both.
Each offers something totally different and skipping one means missing a huge part of the full Guilin experience.
Guilin Is Best For:
- Iconic attractions like the Reed Flute Cave, Elephant Trunk Hill, Sun and Moon Pagodas and the Two Rivers and Four Lakes scenic area.
- Eating and shopping along Zhengyang Pedestrian Street and night food markets
- Access to Guilin Liangjiang International Airport and Guilin and Guilin North High Speed Railway stations
Yangshuo County Is Best For:
- Serine countryside scenery and a glimpse of regional life
- Bamboo rafting and bamboo boats on the Yulong River
- Hiring a moped and exploring Yangshuo’s, rice fields and villages
- Slower travel and nature-focused photography
- Nightlife along West Street pedestrian Street
- Access to Yangshou High Speed Railway station
Staying in both Guilin and Yangshuo gives you the best of Guangxi Zhuang Province balancing the city sites and the regional countryside immersion.
Ideal Time Split between Guilin and Yangshou
- Arrive into Guilin for 1–2 nights before taking a DiDi to Yangshou
- Spend 1–2 nights in Yangshuo County before taking the high speed train from Yangshou High Speed Railway Station to your next destination.
Another reason this split works so well is that both Guilin and Yangshuo are BOTH served by high-speed rail. You can arrive into one city and depart from the other, making it an easy, and smart way to explore both without any backtracking.
Where to Stay in Guilin
Recommended Guilin Hotel: We stayed at the Venus Royal Hotel (Guilin Elephant Trunk Hill Sun and Moon Twin Towers) and could not recommended it more!! It had the best location, views AND price!!

Where to Stay in Yangshuo County
Recommended Yangshuo Homestay: We stayed at Yangshuo Moye Sanqiu Homestay, located directly opposite and across the river from West Street. It’s easily accessible via an 8-yuan short boat ride that runs roughly every 10 minutes, or its by 10 minutes in a DiDi taxi.
The views over the mountains were absolutely incredible, and the room was one of the largest we’ve ever stayed in. It featured a huge bathtub and all the modern tech you’d expect in China.

Getting Between Guilin & Yangshuo
One of the best ways to travel between Guilin and Yangshuo is by taking a Li-River cruise. This isn’t just transport, it’s one of the region’s top experiences.
A Li-River cruise boats take you past karst mountains, fishing villages, bamboo groves, water buffaloes, and the misty bends of the River Li.
Alternatively, if you are short on time, or dont want to take the cruise boat, you can take a Didi or Taxi, which will take around 60 minutes door to door.
Best Things to Do in Guilin, China (Guangxi Province)

Two Rivers and Four Lakes scenic area
This network of rivers and lakes wraps around central Guilin and is perfect for walking, taking in the scenery or a gentle cruise. There are plenty of walking tracks, with incredible viewpoints to stop at along the way.
Sun and Moon Pagodas
These twin pagodas sit on Shan Lake and are especially stunning at night, when they’re illuminated and reflected in the water. You can pay to go inside both pagodas, with the Moon Pagoda accessed via an underwater tunnel. I was genuinely surprised by the level of detail and artwork inside, it was absolutely worth the cheap ticket price, plus you get to climb to the top of both towers.
Visit Elephant Trunk Hill
Guilin’s most iconic sight, Elephant Trunk Hill looks exactly like an elephant dipping its trunk into the Li River. It’s a riverside walk with lots of bridges, look outs and the island of love.
Zhengyang Pedestrian Street and nightly food
The liveliest street in Guilin, Zhengyang is overflowing with shopping, street snacks, and people-watching. It’s touristy but fun, come hungry as the night food markets are cheap and delicious!
Cruise the Legendary Li River from Guilin to Yangshou / Xingping Ancient Town
The Li River is Guilin’s crown jewel. A Li-River cruise showcases everything the region is famous for, jagged peaks, bamboo rafts, and classic karst mountain topography.
Explore Reed Flute Cave
Reed Flute Cave is genuinely impressive, and its sheer size will blow your mind. Allow at least 60–90 minutes to explore the cave system. Known as the “Palace of Natural Arts” its colour-lit stalactites and stalagmites create one of the most surreal cave experiences in all of China.
Longji Rice Terraces (Longji Rice Terrace)
The Longji Rice Terraces, are among China’s most spectacular. Located near Ping’an Village and Huangluo Yao Village, these terraces are shaped by the Zhuang minority and Yao people. You will need to plan for a big day or may want to stay overnight as it is over 2 hours drive each way from Guilin
Best Things to Do in Yangshou, China (Guangxi Province)
Yangshou Bamboo Rafting
Yulong River Bamboo Rafting is one of the most memorable experiences in Yangshuo, offering a scenic glide past rice paddies, limestone karst peaks, and sleepy farming villages. Drifting downstream on a traditional bamboo raft with a local boatman, you’ll pass through seven dam walls where the calm float suddenly turns into a thrilling rush before easing back into scenes of water buffalo grazing along the riverbanks, arched stone bridges, and reflections so perfect they look photoshopped.
You can also enjoy a similar bamboo rafting experience at Xingping Ancient Town. We chose to experience ours at Yulong River so I cannot give any recommendations on how this experience would be.
West Street
Yangshuo’s beating heart is West Street! It blends old stone buildings with shopping and restaurants. It’s lively at night, relaxed by day, and a great base for grabbing some dinner and shopping for souvenirs.
Xingping Ancient Town
A trip to Xingping Ancient Town is well worth it, famous for the classic Li River view featured on the ¥20 note. Wander the old streets and soak in a quieter, more traditional side of the region.
Hire a Moped to explore
Hiring a moped is one of the best ways to experience Yangshuo, ride through rice paddies, past mountain peaks, and tiny villages all at your own pace.
You’ll find vendors renting bikes in the main West street, but also at many of the other attractions.
