HAKUBA VALLEY: The BEST Skiing in Japan & Place to Ski near Tokyo
Where is Hakuba Valley
Hakuba is located in the Nagano Prefecture. It is approximately 270km northwest of Tokyo, 420km northwest of Osaka and 330km northwest of Kyoto.
It is a cute little town with so much character and a great FUN VIBE.
Getting to Hakuba Valley from Tokyo
Hakuba Valley’s proximity to Tokyo definitely adds to its appeal, and why it is one of the best places to ski near Tokyo.
The most convenient way to reach Hakuba from Tokyo is by taking the shinkansen (bullet train) to Nagano Station, followed by a bus or train to Hakuba.
You can book your Shinkansen tickets, we suggest you book in advance as we left it while we were there and the trains do book out in peak ski season. (10% off code: TRAVELLIVNKLOOK)
Alternatively, and the most cost-effective option is to go by direct bus from Tokyo’s major airports or downtown Tokyo.

Why Skiing in Japan is a cheaper alternative
The other allure of Skiing in Japan is the prices. Compared to other countries like Australia, Canada and Europe, Japan can offer an affordable alternative without sacrificing on the conditions.
You will see below, an outline of the daily cost of lift passes, ski hire and ski in and ski out accommodation.
Tips to Save Money on Skiing in Japan
Book your accommodation at least 9-12 months in advance, especially in peak season.
If you are planning on skiing elsewhere this season, look into an Epic Pass. (more information below)
Ski Passes and Accommodation are much cheaper in the shoulder season.
It will be cheaper to book a Happo One lift pass, BUT if you want access to all the Ski Fields in Hakuba Valley then choose the whole pass
The more consecutive days you ski the cheaper it will be for lift tickets and rental gear.
You get a cheaper price by booking in advance.
If you are skiing over a week, look at the price of a Season pass, and if you book in advance, it will be cheaper again.
Where to stay in Hakuba
The reason why Hakuba is our Favorite place to ski near Tokyo is the VIBE in the region and in particular in the main street at Happo One.
Accommodation options in Hakuba range from cozy guesthouses and traditional ryokans to luxurious ski resorts and self-contained apartments.
Our pick is Happo One, however other popular areas to stay include Echoland, and Wadano, both also offer easy access to the ski slopes, restaurants, and nightlife.
My favourite is definately Happo Village, there are lots of restaurants and bars, a great fun vibe and the proximately from the main street, the chair lifts and the accommodation is incredible.
Whether you’re seeking budget-friendly lodgings or upscale accommodations with ski-in/ski-out access, Hakuba has something to suit every preference and budget.
