Your Ultimate Guide to the Best Things to Do in Chongqing… China’s Real-Life Cyberpunk City!
The city of Chongqing China is unreal. Trains go through an apartment building, roads stack on top of each other like the city’s been built on minecraft, and hotel rooms come standard with swimming pools. And the food? So delicious and spicy it’ll change your personality.
Welcome to Chongqing, China’s most chaotic and completely addictive largest city you’ve probably barely heard of.

What Even Is Chongqing China?
Chongqing is one of China’s four powerhouse mega-cities (alongside Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), but honestly… it feels like another planet, and its living in 2050.
It sits right in central China, where the Yangtze River and Jialing River meet, has a bigger population than all of Australia, yet the entire land size is only slightly larger than Tasmania. No big deal, just 32 million people live in Chongqing China, with around 18 million packed into central Chongqing alone.
Chongqing’s Nicknames
- Mountain City – because flat is so basic, and Chongqing is far from basic
- Cyberpunk City – because if it’s not lit up its not in Chongqing
This modern citys is vertical in a way your brain is absolutely not prepared for. You’ll seemingly be on the “ground floor”… and somehow be on level 22.
Fun fact: this place was a major stronghold during the Chinese Civil War, and the air raid shelter tunnels are still everywhere today and some have been converted into restaurants and clubs.

Best Things to Do in Chongqing China – Main Sights & Famous Landmarks
🌃 Hongyadong (Hongya Cave) Night Views
This is the most iconic visual in Chongqing. The glowing riverside complex bursts into life as the lights switch on after sunset. It’s become such a spectacle that the riverfront fills shoulder to shoulder with tourists, cameras ready, waiting for the moment it all lights up.
Inside, you can wander through multiple levels of shops and food stalls. Sample local snacks, pick up souvenirs, or even rent a traditional costume and arrange a cheap and quick photoshoot.
For the perfect photo angle, you can also capture Hongyadong beautifully from Qiansimen Bridge across the river.

🌉 Qiansimen Bridge – Best Skyline Photo Spot
One of the best photo spots in the entire city. You’ll see Chongqing’s skyline, the Jialing River, river boats, neon towers, and the full illuminated Hongyadong in one frame.
Pure cyberpunk.

🏮 Longmenhao Old Street & Xiahaoli Old Town
Both Longmenhao Old Street and Xiahaoli are layered historic areas built into steep hillsides, packed with narrow streets, lantern-lit stairs, hidden cafés, and river views. A perfect post-sunset wander if you love a moody old town vibe.

🌇 Xiang Yun Duan Cha Tan – Sunset Terraced Restaurants
One of the best observation deck style viewpoints in the Nan’an District. Arrive late afternoon, stay for blue hour, and watch Chongqing China light up floor by floor.
🔥PRO Tip: This spot is extremely hard to find. Put in Wilderness Teahouse Parking lot into DiDi and this will take you there. The walk up is VERY steep and even though it might not seem far it is.

🚆 Liziba Station – Train Through an Apartment Building
This is Chongqing’s most viral moment. The metro literally passes through a residential apartment building at Liziba Station. The train goes through every few minutes and you can even ride the train there and back.

🛍 Jiefangbei Pedestrian Area
The main pedestrian area in central Chongqing. Neon screens, global brands, dessert shops, street food stalls, and endless people’s square-style chaos. (Also the perfect spot to base yourself near)
🧠 Kuixinglou – 22-Storey Street Illusion
One of the wildest examples of Chongqing’s vertical reality. You walk out of a building, feel like you’re on ground level… and discover you’re standing 22 floors above the city.
Same mistake. Every tourist makes it.
🏯 Luohan Temple
Right in the middle of downtown madness, this peaceful Song Dynasty temple is a total peaceful escape from the city noise.

🛍 The Ring Shopping Centre (North Zone)
Located in the North Zone, The Ring looks like a jungle grew inside a shopping mall. Waterfalls, indoor gardens, cafés, and insane architecture. Even if you don’t shop, go just for the design.
1949 Chongqing – 360 degree rotating stage production
1949 Chongqing is hands-down one of the most jaw-dropping live shows I’ve ever seen. The entire theatre is built around a massive 360-degree moving stage that physically spins across three separate platforms, so the scenes shift around you in real time like a full-scale movie set in motion. One second you’re in a smoky prison, the next you’re in the middle of a full wartime escape. If you can, book the VIP seats, as they actually move with the stage, so you’re gliding through the story as it unfolds. Not just a show… an experience.
🔥PRO TIP: Make sure you get yourself a set of the translation ear buds, just ask at the ticket counter, and pay a deposit.

Mountain City Alley
Mountain City Alley is one of Chongqing’s most ancient and aesthetic areas. Wind your way through cobblestone alleyways and endless staircases, teahouses, souvenir shops, and aesthetic cafés, with skyline views that hit you out of nowhere.

Yangtze River Cable Car
Hop on the Yangtze River Cable Car and float above the river like a full main character moment. It’s the best way to watch Chongqing’s neon skyline.
Best Things to Do in Chongqing China – Chongqing Day Trips & Natural Wonders
🌉 Wulong County – Three Natural Bridges (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
One of the most famous UNESCO World Heritage Site landscapes near Chongqing China. The Three Natural Bridges in Wulong County are towering limestone natural bridges carved by nature. It feels like stepping into a fantasy movie set.
One of the best day trip options from the city.
🏯 Ciqikou Ancient Town
The most famous ancient town near central Chongqing. Packed with various shops, teahouses, souvenirs, street food, river views, and Bayu architecture. It’s touristy, but fun touristy.
🗿 Dazu Rock Carvings (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
The legendary Dazu Rock Carvings are another UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China’s most impressive religious art collections. Thousands of Buddhist statues carved into cliff walls over 1,000 years ago.
Chongqing Food Wise – What to Eat
You cannot leave Chongqing China without:
- Proper blistering hot pot
- Chongqing noodles
- Street skewers from food stalls
- Spicy street food along river promenades
This city does not believe in mild.
Museums, Culture & Local Districts
- Three Gorges Museum / Gorges Museum – Learn about the Yangtze River, dam projects, floods, and regional history
- Shapingba District – Student energy, local life, food streets
- Rongchang District – Lesser-visited cultural pockets
- Nanbin Road – Night walks, skyline cruises, and drone shows
- Guinness World Record drone performances happen along the river during certain festivals

When to Visit Chongqing (And When to Run)
✅ Best time:
- Spring (Mar–May)
- Autumn (Sept–Nov)
❌ Summer:
Up to 40°C+ with humidity. One of China’s “Three Furnaces”.
❌ National Holidays:
Absolute chaos. Crowds + sold-out transport.
Survival Apps You Absolutely Need
- WeChat & Alipay – all payments via QR code
- DiDi – ride hailing
- Trip.com – to book all your trains & hotels
- Amap / Baidu Maps – Google Maps is unreliable here and wont work without a….⏬

FAQ – Visiting Chongqing China
Is Chongqing safe?
Yes. Very safe. Just steep.
Can you survive without Chinese?
Yes — with translation apps, patience, and pointing.
How do people pay in Chongqing?
Using Alipay or Wechat. Cash is rare and we actually didn’t use any in 3 weeks.

Because it’s so unique, vertical, chaotic, spicy, historic, futuristic, and built into mountains.
