How to get around Kyushu and Fukuoka

When planning your Fukuoka Itinerary, it is important to consider how you will travel from place to place. Whilst Fukuoka City is well connected by trains, reaching the regional areas of Kyushu can be more of a challenge. Below we have set out your options to ensure your Fukuoka Itinerary runs smoothly.

Kyushu Travel Passes

If your main mode of transport is via the Kyushu Rail network, then the unlimited Fukuoka City Subway Pass OR a JR Kyushu Rail Pass may be a good option for you.

Hire a car

Another option is to Hire a Car to explore Kyushu. This is a great option, as a lot of places are not as easy to access by public transport. Driving in Kyushu and Fukuoka, is also NOT as daunting as it seems, roads are well signed, not crazy busy and Google Maps is very accurate.

Hire a CamperVan

Important things to know before you go!

Takachiho Gorge

Takachiho Gorge was one of our itinerary highlights. It’s a stunning natural wonder located in Miyazaki Prefecture, renowned for its dramatic cliffs, lush greenery, and the beautiful Gokase River that flows through it.

One of the highlights is the enjoying a scenic boat ride to experience through the gorge from the water.

Takachiho Gorge is a 2-hour drive from Fukuoka, making it a perfect day trip destination.

TIP: If you want to rent a scenic rowboat, this needs to be booked in advance. Tickets become available 30days prior and they BOOK OUT quickly. I suggest setting a reminder to book to save missing out! Book a boat: Takachiho Gorge

GETTING TO TAKACHIHO GORGE:

Driving – 2.5 hours
Train – 4 hours +
Bus – 3.5 hours +

Kumamoto Castle

The Kumamoto Castle, often said to be one of Japan’s most impressive castles, was originally built in the 17th century and is an icon of Kyushu.

Fukuoka’s Yanagawa – the Venice of Kyushu

Another great place to add to your Fukuoka Itinerary is the regional town of Yanagawa. Yanagawa is known as the “Venice of Kyushu”.
