If you’ve ever traveled to Japan, you’d be very familiar with their go-to Suica or Pasmo IC transit cards. These cards can be used them on all transporation. PLUS can be used at Family Marts, Lawsons, 711’s and a lot of restaurants and retailers.
Sadly, since August, 2023 the sales of physical Suica and Pasmo cards was indefinitely suspended, due to the ongoing global semiconductor shortage.
So, if you’re planning a trip to Japan, you’ll need to know how you can get yourself a Suica or Pasmo Card. They are essential for using the train network in Japan!
How to Obtain Suica or Pasmo Card in 2024
Despite the shortage, there are still several reliable ways to obtain a Suica or Pasmo card during your stay in Japan:
Pre – Purchase
In my opinion, the BEST and most convenient way to make sure you find yourself a Suica or Pasmo IC Transit card, is by pre purchasing one ahead of time. Purchase a Suica or Pasmo at Major Train Stations:
As at January 12, 2024, foreign tourists can purchase Suica cards at JR East Japan Travel Service Centers in Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro or Ueno Stations.
Pick up a Suica or Pasmo at Airports:
According to reports from recent travelers, upon arrival you should be able to find one at one of the international airports in Japan, including Narita, Haneda
Use Mobile Apps (Apple Only):
Recently Suica has added the option to add a digital card to your Apple Wallet. While this doesn’t provide a physical card, which I find very handy, it offers the same functionality for transportation within Japan. Apparently, an Android digital card should be available for foreign visitors by 2025.
