Day Trips from Kyoto (hidden gems)
Lake Biwa
Just 1 to 1.5 hours from Osaka or Kyoto, Lake Biwa is Japan’s largest freshwater lake and a perfect getaway for a change of scenery. Joining a guided day tour makes exploring stress-free, especially since many of the most scenic spots are tricky to reach without a car. On our visit, we enjoyed round-trip transport, a knowledgeable local guide, and four unforgettable stops. Highlights included the striking Shirahige Shrine with its floating torii gate, the peaceful Ukimido Temple seemingly adrift on the water, the storybook-style La Collina village, and the breathtaking Lake Biwako Valley Lookout — my personal top pick.

Amanohashidate View Land

This was one of the best views I’ve ever experienced. Ride the chairlift up to see Japan’s famous sandbar, often called the “Bridge to Heaven.”
Perched high above one of Japan’s most iconic scenic spots, Amanohashidate View Land offers a breathtaking panorama that left me in awe. What makes it even more enjoyable is that it’s not just about the view, there are plenty of fun attractions too, including pedal cars, a ferris wheel, go-karts, an observation deck, and even a restaurant where you can relax and soak it all in.

Okayama Day Trip from Kyoto
If you’re looking to escape the crowds and slow down the pace, a day trip to Okayama from Kyoto is both simple and rewarding. Hop on the Shinkansen from Shin-Kyoto Station, and in just 1.5 minutes you’ll be there.
Begin with a quick 15-minute local train ride to Kurashiki’s Bikan Historical Quarter, a beautifully preserved canal district often nicknamed the “Venice of Japan.” Willow trees drape over calm waterways, Edo-era buildings line the streets, and the atmosphere feels like stepping back in time. For something extra special, take a traditional boat ride through the canals to see the town from a whole new angle. Afterward, wander at your own pace past white-walled storehouses, artisan craft shops, and charming little cafés.
Once you’ve soaked in Kurashiki’s charm, head back to Okayama City to visit Korakuen Garden, one of Japan’s top three landscape gardens. Right next door is Okayama Castle, with its sleek black exterior and sweeping views from the top floor. By the end of the day, you’ll have experienced a perfect mix of history, scenery, and relaxation — all with enough time to catch the train back to Osaka for dinner.
