DAY 1: Shangri-La: Tibetan Culture at 3,200m
Shangri-La has some of Southwest China’s most dramatic mountain scenery, known as “place close to heaven” Shangrila is home to many Tibetan tribes and 25 other ethnic groups. From prayer flag temples, Yak Shis-kebabs to snow-capped mountains, here’s how we spent a few magical days exploring the best of Shangri-La and Lijiang.
Getting to Shangri-la Yunnan
Shangri-La is accessible by both high-speed rail and plane, making it easy to reach from other parts of Yunnan AND China. Traveling by high-speed train in China is incredibly fast, efficient, and comfortable.
You can conveniently book tickets through Trip.com, but be sure to plan ahead. Trains often sell out, and while the official booking window opens 14 days in advance, Trip allows you to reserve earlier, they’ll automatically secure your seats the moment tickets become available. Plus, tickets are refundable and changeable, giving you flexibility if your plans shift. (read my guide here for more tips)
Additionally, if you’re booking flights, prices usually drop about one to two months before departure. For some reason, they tend to be higher when booked too far in advance… at least, that’s what we found during our trip.
Things to do in Shangri-la Yunnan
We spent one full day and night in Shangri-la and were able to see these incredible sites:

Dukezong Ancient Town
With over 1,300 years of history, Dukezong Ancient Town has beautifully preserved its authentic Tibetan. The cobbled streets are alive with local crafts, handmade souvenirs, and traditional cuisine that showcase the heart of Tibetan culture. Don’t leave without trying a yak meat dish, tender, flavorful, and surprisingly delicious!

Dafo Temple Prayer Wheel
One of the town’s most iconic landmarks is the Dafo Temple Prayer Wheel, a towering 21-meter golden monument, the largest of its kind in the world. It’s believed that spinning the wheel three times brings good fortune and blessings for the future.
Entry is free, but you’ll need to scan the QR code at the entrance to reserve a time slot. You’ll receive a digital ticket, granting access to the hilltop site where the wheel sits surrounded by peaceful Tibetan temples and shrines.

Xiang Ge Li La Da Jing Fan – Prayer Flags
A short distance from the main town, Xiang Ge Li La Da Jing Fan is another spiritual site known for its vast circle of prayer flags that ripple in the mountain breeze. The scene is both peaceful and powerful, a kaleidoscope of color set against dramatic highland views. Each flag carries prayers and mantras, believed to spread goodwill and compassion with every gust of wind, making it a beautiful stop to reflect and soak in the spiritual essence of Shangri-La.

Songzanlin Monastery (Little Potala Palace)
Songzanlin Monastery is another Shangra-la site we would have loved to see, but did not have time. Often called the “Little Potala Palace,” Songzanlin Monastery is a must-visit for anyone interested in Tibetan Buddhism.
DAY 2 – 4: Lijiang: UNESCO Magic and Naxi Culture
Getting to Lijiang, Yunnan
After basking in the spiritual zen of Shangri-La, we opted for a private tour and driver to take us down to our second destination, Lijiang. And honestly, it turned out to be one of the best decisions of the trip. Not only was it cost-effective and time-saving, but it also gave us the freedom to stop at remote hidden gems along the way.
The car journey itself is half the adventure: winding through dramatic mountain passes, Tibetan villages, and valleys so scenic they look painted. It also opened the door to two of Yunnan’s most spectacular natural wonders — Tiger Leaping Gorge and the White Water Terraces.
If you’d rather skip the private tour, there’s also a high-speed train connecting Shangri-La and Lijiang, a quick, modern, and convenient alternative.
DAY 2 – Our Private Day Tour from Shangri-La to Lijiang
We booked our private tour / transfer through GetYourGuide, and it couldn’t have been smoother. Once you book, their local team reaches out to help customize your itinerary. You can follow their suggested route or create your own adventure with personalized stops and scenic detours.
📲 Travel tip: Download the GetYourGuide app and use my code TRAVELLIVN5 for 5% off your booking!
Shangrila to Lijiang Private Day Tour
Here are the highlights and viewpoints we visited along the way:
1. White Water Terraces (Baishuitai)
The White Water Terraces, or Baishuitai, are one of Yunnan’s most enchanting and lesser-known natural wonders. These naturally formed limestone terraces spill down the hillside, forming layers of milky-white and turquoise pools that shimmer in the sunlight.
The site holds deep spiritual meaning for the Naxi people, who believe the waters here are sacred and hold the key to a happy marriage.
2. Haba Snow Mountain Viewpoint
A short drive from Baishuitai brings you to one of the best panoramic lookouts of Haba Snow Mountain, standing proudly at over 5,000 meters. On clear days, you can see the mountain’s glaciers glinting in the sunlight, a perfect spot for a quick drone shot or a peaceful coffee break.

3. Yeva Snowberg Cliff Hotel Café
Perched dramatically on a mountain ridge, the Yeva Snowberg Cliff Hotel Café is worth the stop for both its views and vibes. The incredible coffee shop with 20 foot glass windows overlooks Tiger Leaping Gorge, offering some of the most photogenic panoramas of the entire drive. Definitely Instagram worthy!
4. Tiger Leaping Gorge
If you’re chasing jaw-dropping landscapes, Tiger Leaping Gorge will blow you away. Carved by the roaring Yangtze River, it’s one of the deepest gorges in the world, framed by cliffs that soar over 2,000 meters high.
We did the lower trail, which is accessible by escalators, I highly suggest buying this additional ticket 70cny to save your legs. Even at this altitude it’s still a struggle.

DAY 3 – Lijiang’s Yulong Snow Mountain Scenic Spot
The Yulong Snow Mountain Scenic Area is Lijiang’s crown jewel and is a sprawling wonderland of glacial peaks, alpine yak meadows, and turquoise lakes.
You’ll first need to pay the Scenic Area entry fee (100 CNY) — this covers general admission, internal transport, and access to Blue Moon Valley. From there, you can choose to visit either the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Glacier Park (the highest peak) or Yak Meadow.
Keep in mind that cable car tickets must be purchased in advance, as they often sell out up to a week ahead. Another optional add-on is the Lijiang Impression Show, which also requires a separate ticket.
Lastly you have the option to catch the scenic train which can be prepurchase or booked on the day, pending ticket availability.
All tickets can be pre-purchased here
Yulong Snow Mountain Scenic Area / Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
- Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Glacier Park: Take the cable car up to 4,506 meters, where snow-dusted peaks and panoramic views make the altitude worthwhile. 🔥PRO TIP: Book early as tickets often sell out a week in advance.
- Yak Meadow: A slightly lower-altitude option where you can hike for an hour at the summit and see yaks grazing against the backdrop of the snow capped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
- Blue Moon Valley: At the base of the mountain, this series of crystal-clear lakes shimmers in shades of turquoise and jade. Even on cloudy days, the reflections are mesmerizing. Take an opportunity to take some photos with a mammoth Yak for 50CNY!!
- Lijiang Impressions Show
Set in an open-air theater at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the Impressions of Lijiang performance is an unforgettable cultural experience. Directed by Zhang Yimou (the visionary behind the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony), the show features hundreds of local Naxi, Tibetan, and Yi performers dressed in traditional attire. With the mountain as a natural backdrop, it tells the story of Lijiang’s people, history, and connection to nature through powerful dance and song. It’s a visual spectacle — part storytelling, part spiritual celebration. - The Jade Mountain Scenic Train with large glass windows, offers a 20 km journey through snow capped mountain ranges and alpine meadows. It takes about 35 minutes one way. A single ticket costs around 50 CNY, while a round-trip is about 80 CNY. It’s a scenic, stress-free way to enjoy the mountain, and bundled packages with cable cars or Glacier Park access start at roughly $100aud

DAY 4: Lijiang Central Sites
Lijiang Old Town
Arriving in Lijiang Old Town feels like stepping into a storybook. With over 800 years of history, this UNESCO World Heritage site is beautifully preserved yet vibrantly alive. What’s most surprising is its sheer size, it’s an endless maze of cobblestone streets, canals, and traditional wooden houses, buzzing with life both day and night.
Every evening, the main square transforms into a celebration. Locals and travelers gather around bonfires for traditional dances, while singers perform from balconies above the lantern-lit streets. Down by Bar Street, the nightlife comes alive with live bands, neon lights, and energy that spills into every corner.
Don’t miss Flower Street, a canal-lined walkway adorned with seasonal blooms and cozy restaurants overlooking the water, the perfect spot for a drink and people-watching.

Baisha Ancient Town
Just 20 minutes from Lijiang Old Town, Baisha Ancient Town offers a quiet contrast to the busy main hub. Once the capital of the Naxi Kingdom, it’s filled with ancient murals, quaint tea houses, cute animals in every store and cobbled alleys that feel untouched by time. Spend a morning wandering here, chatting with local artisans who handcraft silver jewelry and embroidery using techniques passed down for generations. It’s one of the few places where you can still sense the authentic rhythm of old Naxi life.
Tinghua Valley
Just a short 20-minute drive from Lijiang, Tinghua Valley feels like a real-life Ghibli / hobbit village. This peaceful haven is surrounded by unbelievable seasonal flowers, backed by towering mountains, and dotted with llamas lazily grazing in the fields. It’s a lesser-known gem that’s incredibly photogenic. Perfect soaking up Yunnan’s natural beauty without the crowds.
COST: 80 Yuan / $18 aud
TICKETS: Tinghua Valley

DAY 5: Dali: Ancient Charm Meets Lake Life
Catch a 2.5-hour high-speed train from Lijiang to Dali for a lakeside escape.
We stayed in the popular “Little Santorini” area, which honestly feels like stepping straight into Greece. Whitewashed buildings, blue-domed towers, and sparkling lake views will have you rubbing your eyes in disbelief.
After exploring this beautiful spot, we hired an electric buggy and cruised slowly along the lake’s edge, soaking up the scenery all the way to Shuanglang Ancient Town. There, we stopped for lunch, browsed local shops, and took in the peaceful waterfront views.
As the sun set, we enjoyed afternoon drinks on our veranda and our private hot and cold pool, before heading out for a cozy local dinner back in the Santorini Village, the perfect end to a dreamy day by the lake.
Where we stayed: Dali Santorini

DAY 6 – Kunming City Centre: Your Gateway to Yunnan
Kunming city serves as your gateway city to Yunnan.
After wrapping up your dreamy lakeside escape in Dali, hop on a high-speed train to Kunming. Kunming, known as the Spring City, greets you with mild weather, leafy streets. Once you arrive, drop your bags and dive straight into the city highlights.
Start with Nanping Pedestrian Street, the buzzing heart of Kunming filled with shops, cafés, street snacks, and every kind of street food imaginable. From there, head to Zhuanxin Wet Food Market, a must-see for food lovers, think piles of fresh produce, spices, wild mushrooms, snacks on sticks, and all the local flavours Yunnan is famous for.
When you need a breather, visit the impressive Kunming Waterfall Park, home to Asia’s largest man-made waterfall (yes, it’s massive!), and finish your day wandering through the peaceful Green Lake Park, where locals dance, play instruments, sip tea, and soak up the sunset.
Day 7: Kunming Stone Forrest
The Stone Forest (Shilin) is absolutely mind-blowing. 270-million-year-old limestone formations that look like a sci-fi movie set. It’s about a 3/4 day trip from the city center, and trust me, your Instagram will thank you.
It’s the perfect blend of culture, food, and city vibes before ending your Yunnan adventure.
FAQ
Is altitude sickness really that bad?
It varies by person, but at 3,200m many people feel something, I certainly did. Common symptoms include headaches, fatigue, shortness of breath, and trouble sleeping. Prevention strategies include taking Diamox tablets, staying hydrated, and avoiding alcohol and TAKE IT SLOW! If you’re worried about altitude effects, you can still do an amazing yunnan tour without visiting Shangri-La by spending more time in western Yunnan’s lower elevation areas.
Can I do this trip without speaking Chinese?
Absolutely! Your translator Apps will be your best friend, I use Google Translate, Koli Kioli App, and WeChat (has built-in translation features). Point at menus, use photos for communication, and remember that people are generally helpful.
Should I book everything in advance or wing it for my Yunnan Itinerary?
Book flights at least 4-6 weeks in advance, and high speed trains at least 14 days in advance, especially during peak seasons. Some activities need advance reservations as they sell out a week in advanced like the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cable cars,
Is Yunnan safe for solo travelers, especially women?
Very safe – China has low crime rates and Yunnan locals are famously welcoming to visitors.
When is the best time to visit Yunnan China
The best times to visit Yunnan are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the weather is mild and pleasant for outdoor activities.
During July and August, the wet season brings heavy rains, but it is also peak travel time for tourists.
Local Cuisine in Yunnan
Yak is a commonly used in Yunnan Meals, Including kebabs and hot pots, surprisingly I really enjoyed the meat, and it was quite tender and flavorsome.
Yunnon is also famous for Fungi and Mushrooms, so alot of dishes including fried rice, noodles, wontons are based around these ingredients.
One of the most popular dishes in Yunnan is the ‘Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles’, a unique and flavorful dish that is a must-try.
